Spain Trip: Day 12

Today was rest day. We spent the day just relaxing and recuperating from the previous long day visiting Tangier. We also took a break from Spanish food and ordered Thai food for lunch. We have another long trip tomorrow to Ronda, home of Spain's oldest bullring.

I will devote today's blog to a favorite topic: the roundabout or la rotunda. The roundabout is nothing new; we have them, too, in the United States and in many countries. But not as much as Europe. Here in Spain, it seems like once you're in the city or town proper, just about every intersection is a roundabout.

The roundabout eliminates traffic lights and is designed to facilitate traffic. There can be one or two lanes, depending on how busy the traffic is. Before entering the roundabout, you're supposed to yield to vehicles already in the circle, and before exiting, make sure you have your blinkers on.

Roundabouts are often adorned with monuments, plants, sculptures, and all kinds of artwork. Some of them are very impressive!
